What does breakdown cover include?

  • Breakdown cover, also known as rescue, isn't included as standard, but is an additional cover option you can buy to enhance your cover.
  • All of our breakdown cover is provided by the RAC.

Breakdown cover options

There are 6 levels of breakdown cover available depending on your budget and needs:

Roadside

  • We'll come out and try to get you moving at the roadside (except within 1/4 mile of your home).
  • If we can't fix your car we'll take it up to 10 miles to the nearest garage for you.

Roadside & At Home

  • We'll come out and try to get you moving at the roadside even if your car is at home.
  • If we can't fix your car we'll take it up to 10 miles to the nearest garage for you.

Roadside & Recovery

  • We'll come out and try to get you moving at the roadside (except within 1/4 mile of your home).
  • If we can't fix your car we'll take it to the nearest garage for you or we'll take you and your passengers to any single destination in the UK.

Roadside, Recovery & At Home

  • We'll come out and try to get you moving at the roadside even if your car is at home.
  • If we can't fix your car we'll take it to the nearest garage for you or we'll take you and your passengers to any single destination in the UK.

Roadside, Recovery, At Home & Onward Travel

  • We'll come out and try to get you moving at the roadside even if your car is at home.
  • If we can't fix your car we'll take it to the nearest garage for you or we'll take you and your passengers to any single destination in the UK.
  • We'll give you a hire car that you can use for up to one day while your car is being fixed.
  • If a hire car isn't appropriate, we'll provide you with overnight accommodation or an alternative form of transport.

Roadside, Recovery, At Home, Onward Travel & European

  • This provides everything included above, plus we'll provide you with breakdown assistance in Europe for trips of up to 90 days.

You can add on breakdown cover by following the steps below:

  • Log into your My account (opens in a new window).
  • Scroll down to "My policies" section.
  • Find the car insurance policy you wish to change and select "Change policy".
  • Select the option to "Change or add cover".
  • Essentials customers: Select the level of breakdown cover you need.
    • Plus customers: Breakdown isn’t available on this level of cover. You would need to upgrade to Plus with Roadside and select the level of breakdown cover you need.
    • Plus with Roadside customers: You have Roadside cover as standard. If you wish to upgrade your breakdown cover, select the level of cover you need. If you wish to remove this cover, downgrade to Plus.
    • Plus with Legal customers: Breakdown isn’t available on this level of cover. You would need to upgrade to Premier and select the level of breakdown cover you need.
    • Premier customers: You have Roadside cover as standard. If you wish to upgrade your breakdown cover, select the level of cover you need. If you wish to remove this cover, downgrade to Plus with legal.

Adding this on won't cover you for any breakdowns that have already happened - the cover take effect 24 hours after you add this to your policy.
